Sri Lanka is well known for its endless beaches, wonderfully friendly locals and exotic wildlife. The gemstones in Sri Lanka are equally renowned and as the history of the gemstone industry is a long and eventful one. For decades the enchanting island was affectionately known as Ratna-Dweepa which translates to Gem Island.
Gemstones in Sri Lanka were brought to attention by explorer Marco Polo, who famously wrote about the islands natural wealth. The Italian merchant made claims that Sri Lanka was home to some of the most desirable sapphires, topazes and amethysts in the world.
Sri Lanka has one of the worlds most highly dense gem deposits with almost 25% of Sri Lanka being gem bearing. With roughly 200 types of minerals known around the world, Sri Lanka is home to approximately 75 varieties.
