"Hello, my name is Lori, and on December 20th, 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Donghai County Crystal Museum in China. Donghai County, located in Jiangsu Province, is renowned as the "Crystal City" due to its rich history of crystal mining. It was here that high-quality crystals were first discovered and have been mined extensively. The museum itself, an architectural marvel, is located at the intersection of Jingdu Avenue and Zhonghua Road in Donghai County, Lianyungang City. The museum spans 52,000 square meters, with a building area of 29,000 square meters. It consists of a single comprehensive building with six floors, with the first three floors dedicated to crystal exhibits, the fourth floor housing historical exhibits, and the fifth floor used as office space.

Donghai County Crystal Museum Introduction

The museum opened its doors to the public on September 28th, 2013, and has since become a key attraction for those interested in the geology, history, and cultural significance of crystals. In July 2015, it was officially recognised as a branch of the National Geological Museum. This museum holds a prominent place in the world of crystals, both for its impressive collection and for its role in educating visitors about the importance of crystals in Chinese culture and geology.

A Grand Display of Crystals

From the moment I approached the museum, I was taken aback by its sheer grandeur. The exterior of the building is both modern and elegant, with clean lines and large windows that offer a glimpse of the stunning crystals housed inside. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by the sparkling beauty of the crystal exhibits, and I couldn't wait to dive into the displays.

The crystal collection here is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. There are specimens of all sizes, shapes, and colors, but what truly stood out to me were a few exceptional pieces that made my visit unforgettable.

Crystal King – The Crown Jewel of the Museum

The Crystal King

One of the most awe-inspiring exhibits I encountered was the "Crystal King", or "Water Crystal King", made of pure white crystal. This massive specimen was unearthed on January 15th, 1995, in Niushan Town, Caolin Village of Donghai County. Weighing a staggering 1.99 tons, it is second only to the Crystal King housed at the China Geological Museum. However, what sets this specimen apart is its superior transparency and clarity, making it one of the most prized pieces in the museum's collection. To stand in front of this extraordinary crystal was a humbling experience, as I marveled at its size and pristine quality.

Grape of Amethyst – A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

Another stunning piece that caught my eye was the Amethyst Grape sculpture. This enormous amethyst was intricately carved into the shape of a bunch of grapes, with the artist’s craftsmanship enhancing the natural beauty of the stone. The sculpture was paired with a beautifully detailed wooden base, painted in black and yellow, which made the amethyst grapes appear even more luminous. Under the soft lighting of the museum, the vibrant purple hues of the amethyst shimmered, creating a mesmerizing effect that felt almost magical.

The Obsidian Pillar – Nature's Grandeur

In another section of the museum, I encountered an Obsidian Pillar that was truly awe-inspiring. Standing at approximately 1.2 meters tall and about 80 cm wide, this natural obsidian formation was an extraordinary sight. While I’ve seen countless crystal artworks in my life, the raw power and majesty of this obsidian pillar was something I’ll never forget. The scale and natural form of the crystal created a sense of wonder that left me speechless.

The Perfect Pair – Crystal Carvings of Love

One of the most delicate and beautiful exhibits was a crystal carving called "The Perfect Pair". This sculpture depicted two parrots with their beaks entwined, each holding a Chinese Ruyi (a symbol of good fortune and prosperity). The level of detail was extraordinary—every feather, every expression on the parrots' faces was meticulously carved into the crystal. The sculpture was made from Golden Rutilated Quartz and Titanium Quartz, and it was presented on a rich rosewood base that complemented the bright, golden tones of the crystal.

This piece was notable for three reasons. Firstly, the selection of materials was flawless, with the large crystals exhibiting incredible transparency and a deep, warm tea-colored hue. The golden strands within the quartz shimmered with light, creating a captivating effect. Secondly, the design of the carving itself was clever and touching—one parrot was offering a gift of Lingzhi (a symbol of longevity), symbolizing affection and devotion. Lastly, the exquisite craftsmanship of the carving, particularly the fine details of the parrots’ eyes, beaks, and feathers, was remarkable. The sculpture’s balanced composition, combined with its impeccable design, earned it a national-level award.
